Chart typeProportional tiles

Treemap

Rectangles sized by value, filling the whole frame.

A treemap divides the chart frame into tiles whose areas are proportional to the values. It packs many items into a compact, striking block.

Editorial guide

When to use it

Typical use

Budgets, portfolios and market sizes with many items of very different sizes.

Better avoided

Few items, or when exact values must be compared: bars are clearer.

Layout tips

  • Show names and values on the tiles; small tiles drop labels that do not fit.
  • Use one colour family and highlight the tile you discuss.
  • Give the treemap a wide frame: tiles stay closer to squares.

Data structure

Sample data

Items in the first column and their values in the second.

Paste a table like this one, import it from Excel or CSV, or click in an InDesign table with the same layout.
