How to Get an API Key

AI Translator Pro uses a Bring Your Own Key (BYOK) model. You'll need to register with at least one AI provider to get started. Here's where to obtain API keys for each supported provider:

Simply create an account with your preferred provider, navigate to the API section, and generate a new API key. You'll paste this key into AI Translator Pro during setup.

Glossary Support (CSV or TSV)

AI Translator Pro supports custom glossaries to ensure consistency and accuracy in your translations. Glossaries are especially useful for:

  • Brand names and product terminology
  • Technical terms specific to your industry
  • Preferred translations that must remain consistent across documents

Glossary Format

Your glossary file must be a CSV or TSV file with exactly two columns:

  1. source — the original term in the source language
  2. target — the preferred translation in the target language

First-Time Setup (Quick Start)

Getting started with AI Translator Pro is simple:

  1. Install the Plugin
    Download and install AI Translator Pro from the Adobe Exchange or our website. Restart InDesign if necessary.
  2. Obtain an API Key
    Register with one of the supported AI providers (see table above) and generate your API key.
  3. Open AI Translator Pro
    In InDesign, navigate to the plugin panel and launch AI Translator Pro.
  4. Enter Your API Key
    Paste your API key into the settings and select your preferred AI provider.
  5. Upload a Glossary (Optional)
    If you have industry-specific terms, upload your CSV or TSV glossary file.
  6. Start Translating
    Select your source and target languages, choose the text or document to translate, and let AI Translator Pro handle the rest.

Common Issues & Troubleshooting

Network Connectivity Error

Problem: You see "TypeError: Network request failed" in the logs. Solution: This indicates that the plugin cannot reach the backend server. If you're working in an enterprise environment or behind a corporate firewall, contact your IT department to whitelist the necessary URLs for the plugin to function properly.

Document Storage Location

Problem: Translation fails or the plugin cannot access your document. Solution: Ensure your InDesign document is saved in a locally accessible folder where you have full write permissions. Avoid storing documents in network drives, cloud-synced folders, or restricted directories.

File Size Limitations

Problem: The plugin won't process your document. Solution: AI Translator Pro enforces a 100MB file size limit. If your document exceeds this limit, divide it into smaller sections, translate each section separately, then merge the translated sections.

Special Characters in Filenames

Problem: Translation fails with unusual errors. Solution: Create a copy and rename using only basic alphanumeric characters (A-Z, 0-9, hyphens, underscores). Avoid characters like / \ : * ? " < > | # % & { } $ ! @ +.

Data Privacy & Billing

How Billing Works

AI Translator Pro operates on a Bring Your Own Key model, which means:

  • You are billed directly by your chosen AI provider (OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek, or Mistral)
  • The plugin itself charges no per-translation fees
  • You maintain full control over your API usage and spending limits

Data Privacy

When you use AI Translator Pro:

  • Your content is sent securely to the AI provider you've selected
  • Documents are automatically deleted from our servers after the translation is complete
  • API keys are not stored on our server
  • Your API key and data handling are governed by your chosen provider's privacy policy
  • We recommend reviewing your AI provider's terms of service and data handling practices
